Legal Question in Family Law in Maryland
I have been separated from my husband for over 9 years and would now like to file the necessary paperwork with the courts on my own to get a divorce. However, I have had no contact with my former spouse in over 5 years and do not know his whereabouts or of any way to reach him. He only has one sister for family and she had not heard from him either. There are no children or property issues involved. How should I file and can I get a divorce without being able to serve him papers?

Since there are no ancillary issues, you can get court authority to serve him by publication. You would publish notice of the suit in a local paper that publishes in the area of his last known address. You have to file a motion to get approval of the court to do this after filing the complaint.
