Legal Question in Family Law in Maryland

Separation agreement

My husband and I have split. I have our child and he totally agrees with it. We do not have money to spend on a separation but I need to know if there is a way to put in writing our agreement so that I am covered incase things turn bad. This is all new to me. I would appreciate any guidance. I would be able to make payment arrangements if need be to have papers drawn up. HELP!

Re: Separation agreement

You would be smart to have a written agreement spelling out that you have custody of the child. The agreement should also state an amount that your husband will pay in monthly child support. This figure is based on your respective incomes and can be derived from the MD Code. There are a number of other things that should be included in the separation agreement.

It will save you a lot of money and problems in the long run if you hire an experienced family law attorney to prepare such an agreement now. Perhaps your husband will share the cost if you can agree on the terms. Once you have signed the agreement, it makes it easy down the road when one of you files for divorce.
