Legal Question in Family Law in Maryland

serving felon on the run

My husband was facing jail, and decided to flee. He abandoned the family last July, and now his family wants copies of my kids birth certificates. This reason and others, leads me to believe that my husbands family will try to take the kids out of the country. I want to change our names and identities, but the court says I need to serve my husband first. How can I serve him when he has left, and I don't know where?

Sending the papers to our last address will not surfice. Any comments on how to get around this? It was recommended to me that I look in MD title 15-901, and MD rule of civil procedure- 2-121, but I don't see anything that will work. A pro's opinion is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

In situations like this you need to seek court permission to serve by publication. If granted, you send notice of whatever you are filing to his last known address and any addresses he might receive mail, and then publish the notice in a local newspaper.
