Legal Question in Family Law in Maryland

Son lives with mom and alcoholic husband. We have joint custody. When husband gets to drinking Grandmom (Who lives up the street 3 doors) tells child of 11 that I am actually the one with the problem and that I am drinking which is false. This has been going on for quite a while now and son has become alieanated from me and my normal family. He does not want to come here for visitation and does not care to talk on the phone anymore. I have confronted mother in law and she claims I can not do anything about what she and her grandson talk about. Question is does grandmom have any custodial rights to child and what can I do to stop the defimation of character / slander to save the relationship with my son?

You can seek to modify custody. In your petition, seek the appointment of a guardian ad litem for your son based on the psychological abuse his grandmother appears to be inflicting. The judge may order the mother to stop allowing your son to have contact with the grandmother.

In the alternative, suing for defamation would be difficult because your son is so young.
