Legal Question in Family Law in Maryland
Step-Parent Rights to Child
I have a wonderful 2 year-old step-son. I have been in his life since he was born, I was even at the hosital when he was born. My husband and my step-sons biological mother have 50-50 custody. His mother is very accepting of my mother/son relationship with her son. My question is God forbid something happen to my husband or to our marriage, would it be feasable for me to get visitation or some type of legal right to my 'son'? Or should we get something official drawn by a lawyer?

Re: Step-Parent Rights to Child
You have no official rights as a stepmother. If the bio mother is willing to grant you visitation rights, you should have an experienced family lawyer prepare an agreement to that effect. Otherwise you'd have to fight for such rights in court, with no assurance that they would be granted.
