Legal Question in Family Law in Maryland
Step-parent's legal exposure when teen starts driving?
Hello.
My husband has joint legal and sole physical custody of his 15 year old son, whom I have never adopted.
What is my legal exposure when this kid starts driving? I am not on the deed or the mortgage of my husband's house, although it is my legal residence.
Is it any different if his mother (who lives 80 miles away but still in Maryland and sees him every other weekend) buys him a car and puts it on her insurance?
Thank you.

If your stepson is driving your car with your permission, and has an accident in DC, you would be liable as the owner. But of course your insurance would protect you, so be sure you have adequate coverage. In MD, you wouldn't be liable unless he was on an errand for you or you let him drive your car even though you knew he was a dangerous driver. If he's driving a car owned solely by your husband, only he would be similarly responsible.
