Legal Question in Family Law in Maryland

Summons in court

A summon for me was left at my door. I did not see who dropped it there. Should I respond to it? If I ignor it, will I be liable, or is there any consequence to me?

Re: Summons in court

If the summons was for repossession of your rented premises for nonpayment of rent or failure to timely vacate the property, the case will proceed without you if you don't show up in court.

If the summons was for something else, such as a collection action, you haven't been properly served under the rules. But an unscrupulous process server (who only gets paid if you are served) might file an affidavit in court saying you were personally served, in which case if you ignore the summons a judgment will be entered against you. Then you would have to file a motion to set it aside and end up in court anyway.

Your smartest move is to contact the plaintiff or their lawyer and try and work the problem out.
