Legal Question in Family Law in Maryland

Summons issued for personal service

Can anyone translate this for me?

Plantiff filed for divorce 3/10/09, on 3/10/09 Plantiffs information sheet was filed and then on 3/11/09 this was completed per the case search website:

''SUMMONS ISSUED FOR PERSONAL SERVICE AND MAILED TO PLAINTIFF.''

Nothing else is listed.

Does anyone know what that last statement means? Where is the divorce in the process? If I am the ''defendent'' is there anything I can do to speed this up? My ex has been handling all this and it seems to be moving slowly. THANKS

Re: Summons issued for personal service

This means that the Plaintiff requested the summons be mailed directly to him for service, instead of sent to a sheriff to serve. Once the Plaintiff receives the summons he will have to find someone over the age of 18 to serve you with the Summons and Complaint. Nothing else should happen in the case until you are served and Plaintiff files an Affidavit of Service with the court.

You can facilitate service by contacting the Plaintiff and arranging a meeting where he will have someone give you the papers. You should them file an Answer to the Complaint and plaintiff should file an Affidavit of Service.
