You can file a petition to modify (reduce) your support obligation based on your recent loss of income. The reduction cannot be made retroactively, so the sooner you do this the sooner you can be eligible for a reduction. You will still be obligated to pay the arrearage. If you can't afford an attorney you can call the county bar lawyer referral service and tell them you need a pro bono lawyer or a referral to a legal clinic. Or you can go to the child support office at the courthouse in Rockville for assistance.
