Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Maryland

I was in an auto accident with no insurance.

I missed the court date and a 20,000 judgment was awarded to the plaintiff. The papers say I have until April 4, 2009 to dispute the judgment but I do not have a lawyer. Is there anything I can do at this point to get this overturned or reduced?

You have to file a motion to set the judgment aside on the ground that you inadvertently missed the court date. You must set forth a valid defense to the allegations of the complaint in your motion. If you knew about the court date and just didn't bother to attend, you probably will not be successful. At this point it would be wise to consult an attorney, although you don't have much time. Contact the Montgomery Bar lawyer referral program and see if you qualify for a reduced fee attorney.
