Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Maryland

Collecting Money from a verbal agreement.

I helped a friend get furniture for his apartment on my credit card with the agreement that he would pay me back. Things are bad between us now and he hasn't paid anything. How do I go about getting my payments for the credit card. He always has an excuse why he can't pay me the money. Can I get the police involved to get the furniture out of the house? Or do I have to go to court. Which I don't want to do that because I live in a different state. He lives in PA and I live in MD. I want him to sign an agreement but I know that he won't. Please help....

Re: Collecting Money from a verbal agreement.

This is a private matter between your and your "friend"; the police aren't going to get involved. The only way to collect if he won't pay voluntarily is to file a collection suit against him in PA. Depending on how much is involved and the law in PA, this may or may not be a small claim. If it is, the procedures are simplified and you shouldn't need a lawyer.

You might try writing him a letter/email, informing him that he is leaving you no choice but to sue him and then file a wage attachment with his employer. This will have an adverse impact on his credit record and not thrill his employer either.
