Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Maryland

Deposition Rules for Defendant

I am being deposed and would like to know what information I am required to provide. Myself and my former employer are being sued based on a contract between the company and an individual.

Do I need to answer personal questions such as marital status, education, et cetera or only questions relevant to the matter at hand?

Thanks.

Re: Deposition Rules for Defendant

You are required to answer all questions that do not call for privileged information. If the other side's lawyer is being abusive, he can be sanctioned. Your lawyer should discuss this with you further. I assume you have a lawyer - if not, get one immediately. If you are in a case where depositions are being taken, it is either in federal court or circuit court, and there is certainly enough at stake to make a lawyer a good investment.
