You have the advantage of having won at the district court level. That basically means that your ex will have a huge burden to overcome to win the case. With that said, I'm not sure why the district court ruled in your favor -- Maryland law is pretty clear, an engagement ring is a "conditional" gift. The condition is marriage. Since the condition wasn't met, the gift goes back to the ex. Unless it can be shown that the gift was for another purpose, like a birthday or some other special occasion, I think you probably lose on appeal, especially now that he has an attorney. But stranger things have happened, so who knows?
My question for you is this -- why do you continue to pursue this? This guy sounds like a total jerk. You sound like you are desperately trying to keep him in your life by any means necessary . . . or you think that keeping the ring is somehow punishing him for how he treated you/your relationship ended. A wise man once said that bitterness is like drinking poison and expecting your enemy to die. Move on with your life -- there are MANY more fish in the sea.
Best of luck.*****The above is for informational purposes only and does not create an attorney-client privilege.********
