Filing a Civil Suit Against A Perpetrator of Identity Theft
I have recently been a victim of identity theft-- a relative of mine forged my signature and used my S.S. number to obtain multiple credit cards (with his name as an authorized user) and then didn't pay the bills. I've turned him in to the credit card companies who say they may prosecute, but I'm wondering if I have grounds to sue him personally for the damage and suffering he has caused me and my family. What are my rights in a civil suit?

First, file a police report. What your relative did is both subject to criminal penalties and civil penalties.

Yes you have rights against this relative. However, key question is does he have any money???If not, whhat can you recover?

You may also file a criminal complaint at your local police station.
