Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Maryland
Paying for my friends car
My live-in girlfriend, of 6 years, and I just purchased a 32,000 truck. Because she has very good credit, and mine is compromised, the car was purchased in her name alone. The car was financed with a local bank, thru the dealer. However, she has no income, and I will make the payments. How can I protect my financial and eventual ownership interest in the vehicle. We are not married, and we only recently moved to Maryland from New York. I am still married to my first wife, who has my 12 year old daughter.

Smart move. You can just see it coming. I've seen this situation with houses, where the two significant others take joint titles then fight. While things are calm, you should get her to sign off on the title. I know, the other half of the title is still with the bank. Your friend is on the hook, her credit is anyway, but I gather she hasn't put up any money and you are the one paying the note. So, get her to at least indorse the title. Ideally, there should be a written agreement that she waives any personal interest in the truck, but that may seem like a pre-nuptial agreement or something like that. Incidentally, how does she feel about the truck? Does she consider it part her?.Eventually, though, you may rehabilitate your credit and apply for a refinance. Call if you need further info.
