Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Maryland

Small Claims lawsuit

I am the VP of a very small non-profit sports organization. We had decided to do a candy bar fundraiser in Nov-Dec. Before the fundraiser was over, several members left our organization without returning the candy bars or the money from the sale of the candy bars. Each person that received a box of candy had to initial a sheet stating that they received the candy. In all, 11 people left with candy bars totaling almost $1700.00 combined. We have filed in court and are scheduled to appear soon. Is there any legal loopholes I should know about that would lead the Judge to allow these people to be able to keep the money and/or candy bars. And if there are, what can I do to make sure we cover the loophole?

Just make sure to have the signed documents indicating these people were being entrusted with the candy but that it remained the property of your organization and they were strictly volunteers. Also be prepared to prove that they didn't return the candy or the proceeds. I would think they would want to resolve the issue without a court hearing given the de minimus amount involved.
