Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Maryland

Can I sue a stranger if they harassed me because someone told them a complete slander about me? What would be my damages in a lawsuit, that this caused me emotional distress?

The law recognizes a cause of action for intentional infliction of emotional distress. However, even if you win on the issue of liability, damages are always difficult to establish in these cases. It would depend upon how long the harassment lasted, whether you can show objective damage, such as loss of a job, shunning by friends, etc. Of course, you might also have a suit against the publisher of the slander, where you could at least show that it resulted in the harassment. I suggest you consult with lawyers who have experience in these kinds of cases. They are unlikely to want to take on such a case unless they feel you have a really good chance of a financial recovery, since they would only be compensated in that event.
