Legal Question in Immigration Law in Maryland

Change of Legal Status from A1 visa to Resident

A friend of mine is the wife of a high officer in an Embassy in Washington DC. They are separated since December 2002 and the divorce process started abroad. She has an A1 visa. She has lived in US for 12 years. Due to her husband's amorous indiscretion, the Embassy is punishing him by sending him back to his country. He has to go back by October 2003.

She and her son (21 years old) want to remain in US. I searched the Dept of State web-site and found that a person can remain here if any employer sponsors, diversty lottery or apply for residency. Can she change her A1 visa status and apply for permanent residency? She only has a part-time job teaching French and Spanish languages. We are trying to find a full-time job. Please advise, time is running out. Thank you.
