H4 to H1 conversion: SSN problem

Recently I got my H1 visa. When I applied for SSN they told that Homeland Security didn't update my status to H1. When I contacted homeland security they told they would update but they haven't done yet. I want to know Is there any problem in getting SSN when a person converts status from H4 to H1. Do we need to supply any other proof other than H1 paper. Please let me know at the earliest. Iam badly in need of this..

Thanks in advance.

Re: H4 to H1 conversion: SSN problem

First of all, if you changed status from an H-4 to an H-1B1, you did not receive a visa but rather an approval notice for the filed petition.

You need to show the original approval notice to the Social Security office so that you can receive an SS # which is valid for work authorization.

Re: H4 to H1 conversion: SSN problem

Once you submit your SSN application, the SSA will try to match it with DHS's records. If that record has yet to be updated, then they will not issue the SSN and you cannot technically begin working. Some companies use a "dummy" SSN so you can start working and then update your personnel record when the SSN is issued. Otherwise, you are left with just trying to rush the DHS to do their job.
