Legal Question in Insurance Law in Maryland

accidentally let a candle burn & started a fire

Insurance company is asking me to repay them for damage cause by a fire. I accidentally left a small candle burn during the holidays and it started a fire. The claim is $16,000.00, I am 72 and work to supplement my Social Security.

Re: accidentally let a candle burn & started a fire

The applicable facts, any at-fault admission that may have been made by your communication to the insurance company (or inferences thereof), the

pertinant policy language, and the legal authority cited by the insurance company would be the first lines

of my inquiry. Without this information, it is impossible to say where the matter lies.

It appears out of line for such a demand under a property and casualty policy. You should contact

an attorney immediately. For a moderate fee, I am available to assist you.

Whether they have a claim depends on the facts. You need to see a lawyer promptly.

Have they told you why they think that you are liable to them for money? I would require more facts to provide any kind of answer. It is certainly unusual.
