Legal Question in Intellectual Property in Maryland

I found a old painting in my attic. I don't know who is the owner or whom it belongs. It is with me for last 8 years. Can I sell or auction it? Is it legal?

If you own the house and the previous owner left stuff there, it is now yours, particularly after such a long time (the statute of limitations on suing to recover it having run).
