Recovery of an investment
If I invested money with an individual who promised to return the investment principal in the event that he lost money from the endeavor in writing, do I have legal rights to sue for my principal to be returned as stated in the contract?

Yes. Since the promise has been placed in writing, you can argue that there was a clear communication to you and a meeting of the minds establishing an enforceable contract.
