Legal Question in Employment Law in Maryland

My employer accessed my court case file to get information about a criminal matter that I was charged with. They used this information to fire me. Can they do this? Somebody told me that, under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, they weren't allowed to without my permission. It just seems awfully unfair that my employer would have unfettered access to my criminal case folder and then be able to use the contents against me.

Court records are generally open to the public and anyone, including employers, may search the court records as they see fit. Unless this involved unusual circumstances like a juvenile or sealed case, there is no need to get permission from the parties themselves to look at a court file.
