Legal Question in Employment Law in Maryland

Was employer within his legal right...

If a salaried employee is under investigation, but was never told from his direct boss- and the direct boss told the salaried employee (manager) not to talk to his own employees (asst. managers)- does he have the right to talk to them outside the workplace, with no mention of the investigation? ex- is it within his legal right to call them to wish them a happy thankgsgiving, at their homes, and can the direct boss use those calls against him as not following directions? Can the direct boss also tell the salaried employee to severe a 20 year existing friendship (outside the store) with an hourly employee, when the hourly employee was placed in his store against his wishes?

Re: Was employer within his legal right...

Maryland is an "at will" employment law state. If there was a contract or agreement between the employee and employer I am available to assist you. Otherwise the agreement is voidable by either party based on will. If a corporation is involved then certain rights may exist. Contact an attorney for advice.

The employer cannot sever your relationship with anybody especially outside of the work environment. He may however use your relationship with a particular person as a reason to get rid of you. On that, he will be within his rights - so long as he did not do it for a discriminatory reason or for a reason that violates a clear mandate of public policy.
