Legal Question in Employment Law in Maryland
My employer refuses to give ten minute breaks for every four hours worked
My employer refuses to give us breaks except a thirty minute unpaid lunch. I told him that I had received breaks on every job I had, but this is my first Maryland job. He told me to prove that he owes me a break. Does Maryland have a wage and hour law that provides employees with breaks during the day?

Neither Maryland nor federal law requires workday breaks. So, if you do not have a contract (either private or union) that mandates breaks, you can not force an employer to provide them.
However, the employer is being greedy and short-sighted. You can point out to him that he will probably have a happier, more productive and satisfied work force by offering small benefits such as a break or two. Even if it is an unofficial policy - take a break when you have a lull in the day if you want, get a cup of coffee, stretch your legs, etc. - it will be appreciated.
Importantly, we are not machines. We wear down during the day. Breaks are often an important way to relieve mental and physical stress and stay in top operating form. Again, that increases productivity, although the employer fears the opposite.
Last, if this is the general way the employer does business - with little regard for the employees - consider finding another job if possible. We only go around once - who needs the hassle?
Good luck.
