Legal Question in Employment Law in Maryland

I have been hired at a Vet clinic in Silver Spring MD and the owner/Vet made me sign a contract on my first day of work stating that if I ever quit and I do not give a two week notice before quiting I must pay him $1,000.00 cash as a penalty or I could not continue working at his clinic. I am a hourly employee doing admin work for his clinic. Is this illegal? What can I do to make him stop making me and the other employees sign this self written contract. The document was not written by an attorney and it was not notarized or signed by a witness. Just him and I on the signature line. Help.

It doesn't' sound enforceable. But my advice is to keep your eyes out for a new job with a reputable employer; give your two weeks notice; and never look back.

On the other hand, while you're there, employers who cut one corner, sometimes cut others. Does he pay for all time worked? ... or require people to stay late but not pay them. Does he pay overtime when it has been worked? or does he make people take comp time or simply pay straight time. Does he keep time records for the employees? Does he pay anyone as a so-called "salary" worker and require them work more than 40 hours?

Let me know if there is anything else going on.
