Legal Question in Employment Law in Maryland
non-compete agreement
I have been working for a company for more than 3years. I was asked to sign a document for proprietary Info. and Non-competition agreement. I was given an ultimatum...either sign the document or resign.
At the time they hired me, this document was voluntary and I know several people who have left the company without signing the document. The company have never brought up this document to me until recently. Past 3years I was working fine without singing the non-competition agreement. I totally agree that company is asking me to sign this for their security but this document is too general. For the security of my future I am so afraid to sign this document. and also in this agreement it says ''Employee acknowledges that he or she is entering into this agreement voluntarily, of his or her accord and free will, and without coercion or pressure of any kind'' Is the ultimatum a pressure? Any advice?
I also met with the CEO and explained certain provisions in which I do not agree with. He responded by saying Sign or Resign.

Re: non-compete agreement
In your first question you ask, Is the ultimatum a pressure? The answer is, what you have described is clearly pressure. It is coercive as well. So are the statements you indicate the CEO
made.
Your second question was, Any advice? I suggest you have an attorney who is knowledgeable
in this area of employment law, review the document. Some or all of it may be unenforceable. To be relatively certain however, a review of the document and further development of the facts will be necessary.
