Legal Question in Employment Law in Maryland
My parents were involved in a head on collision on the way to work because of icy roads. My mother works for the school system and because they didn't call for schools to have a delayed opening this accident occurred. My mother was hospitalized and required emergency surgery due to injuries sustained in the accident, and she will not be able to walk or return to work for a month. The superintendent of the school board has contacted us to check in on the whole situation. My question is if the is grounds for some form of legal action that could result in a settlement, and that is why the board of education was so worried about the accident?

I am sorry to hear of your mom's injuries. Generally speaking an employer bears no responsibility for what happens on the commute to/from work. If your mother was actually working while driving (such as a school bus driver or performing errands for the school), that would be a different scenario.
With the disclaimer that I don't know all the facts, it sounds as though the concerned call may have been simply a concerned call and/or one to see what kind of coverage the school needed to get for your mom's position. A number of legal issues may come into play such as your mom's right to medical leave or disability benefits but your question doesn't mention any problems in those areas. Other attorneys may have different opinions and the specific facts of your case may affect how the law applies. This post is not legal advice but I do hope it gives you some general information.
