Legal Question in Employment Law in Maryland

I received my paycheck the other day and i realized that they did not pay me overtime after i had worked 56 hours last week. I was talking to some people today at work and asked if my place of occupation normally pays time and a half after 40 hours. They told me no, what this place does is they only put 40 hours on your paycheck and then pay you the rest in cash. So i make 8 dollars an hour, and they payed me the extra 16 hours as 8 dollars an hour, instead of it being 12. Can they legally do that? It is a pizza shop, does that make them exempt?

No they cannot do that and, no, being a pizza shop does not make them exempt.
