Legal Question in Employment Law in Maryland
I was recently terminated from a job I was an employee of for seven weeks. I had spent that time training and learning the business. I was given no indication as to low performance. I was quick to answer the phones and offer friendly advice, I smiled at customers when they came in for assistance, I greeted them kindly, I kept busy with paper work and learning the general ins and outs of the business. As I said, I was given no indication that termination was a possiblity. I was pulled into the office by my friend also my boss (I was hired and worked with the owner of the company as well, though not present for this termination notice) I was told the boss said I was terminated. When I asked why, my friend said by law she couldn't tell me. In trying to contact my former boss to assess the situation and understand her reasoning for terminating me, she hasn't returned my phone calls. I'm polite on in the voicemail and honestly just want to know the reasoning. Although I realized Maryland is an at will state, my friend indicated that if I knew the reason in which I was terminated a wrongful termination suit is feared.
I feel it shows incredibly low intregrity of the owner of this company to fire me in this manner; (although low intregrity is not illegal) I've had no write ups, no verbal warnings, and a refusal on the company's part to address the firing. Is there legal recourse here? Or is that just the way it is because Maryland is an 'at will' employment state?
