Legal Question in Employment Law in Maryland

I was told Wednesday, 11/10/2010 I was being laid off because of budget cuts and my last day was Friday, 11/12/2010. I was not given a letter to state the reason or signed anything to say I was laid off and why. To beat that I did not receive a paycheck because I owe them for advanced leave that the company advanced me when I was out because of surgery, that I did not request. I was not told anything in advance that I owned them any leave. I asked my Lead to took into more than a month ago when I had my last procedure. The paycheck was done before I found out that I was being laid off. Can they do this type of practice. Is it legal to laid you off without any written statement. Can they no pay you with out notification.

Assuming you were an at-will employee, an employer can legally fire you for almost any reason so long as it doesn't illegally discriminate. There is no legal requirement for notice to be in writing.

You may want to seek legal review of the issues you mention about leave --- your post does not give enough information to analyze the leave/paycheck issue. Generally speaking employers must pay for all time worked and must provided any owed wages on termination.

While the above post is not a substitute for specific legal advice I hope this general information helps.
