Maryland: I received a letter informing me of my trial date. I received another letter saying my trail date was cancelled and I will have a Merit trail proceeding? What is s Merit Trail?

A Merit Trial simply means a trial where the case will be decided on the evidence / law (or if you prefer, on "the merits").
In District Court cases, the clerk's office may automatically assign a trial date which will stay intact if the Defendant fails to respond but a new date is set if a defendant files a Notice that it intends to defend the lawsuit.
