Retainer Fees

How can the client determine what portion of the retainer fee given to the attorney has been used and can unused amounts be refunded to the client?

It depends on the agreement between lawyer and client. If the fee was to be based on hourly rates plus costs, the lawyer should send a statement of the time and expenses and refund any excess. If it was a flat fee and the work was not completed, the lawyer is entitled to fair compensation for what was done, for which there are no fixed guidelines. In this case, there may or may not be a refund.
