My sympathies for your family's loss. While money can never replace the loss of life, the unfortunate fact is that insurance policies have limits, and those limits are often - usually, in fact - too low to compensate the victims or the surviving family for even the economic consequences of the loss. There may, however, be additional coverage - the policies of the driver of the vehicle in which she was riding, any other driver at fault in the accident; and her own uninsured/underinsured motorist policies. In addition, any driver at fault for the accident may be held personally liable for the damages, but of course if the driver has no assets or income, it will be difficult to collect. Finally, it may be worth looking at whether any third parties may be liable: was there a defect in the car or any of its systems? did a bar allow a driver involved in the accident to drink too much? did someone let a known bad driver use a car? was someone involved in the accident driving on business so as to maybe hold an employer liable? These are some of the questions that a lawyers should look into to ensure that your grandchildren receive some compensation for their terrible loss.
Virginia Attorney Daniel Press has covered most of the ways additional coverage could be available to you and your daughter's family. I would only add if the party responsible was on the job his or her employer would also likely be responsible. You may also need to create an Estate to pursue/settle the claims and there could be Social Security benefits (even Workers Comp benefits) that could be available to your grandchildren.

Although the insurance company might have a limit, the driver might have assets to attack.
