Legal Question in Personal Injury in Maryland
On a Parking Lot
My grocery cart accidentally rolled about 12 feet into the back fender of a new car. I gave the owner my name in order to pay for the one and a half inch scratch (with slight dent) to his fender. He calls and tells me the estimate he has gotten is $800!!! Am I responsible to pay this amount when I feel it is way out of reason?

Re: On a Parking Lot
Your not obligated to pay unless it was your fault that the grocery cart rolled into the man's car. If you don't feel you were careless, but that it was just an unforeseeable accident, let him take you to court. If you do feel you're legally responsible, you can contest the amount of the damage. Get a copy of the estimate and take it to a body shop you trust. They should be able to tell if the repairs being estimated are just to fix the damage you caused, or include repairs of previous damage or wear and tear. You could go so far as to try and get a shop to look at the car itself, or at least a good photo, so that they can give you an "objective" estimate.
