Legal Question in Personal Injury in Maryland

run over by golf cart

I was run over by a golf cart and required knee surgery. The insurancer company has offered me a settlement of two times my medical bills. Is this a reasonable offer?

It probably isn't, unless there is some indication that you might have been partly responsible for the injury. If your medical bills are high and you made a complete recovery from the surgery, it may be a reasonable offer.

The reason the offer is seemingly low to you is that the insurance company knows you don't have a lawyer and is taking advantage of the situation. An experienced personal injury lawyer will usually get a settlement which reflects the true value of the case, and which, despite the lawyer's fee, will net more settlement dollars to you than if you settle it on your own.

It could be reasonable but in order to say I need to know more of the facts. Simple multiples of medicals is not an acceptable method to determine the adequacy of an offer. I have answered other questions on the board that provide more details on this matter. Contact me to discuss.
