Legal Question in Personal Injury in Maryland

School Drug Raid Rights

Recently at my school their was a drug raid. I wasn't searched or anything, but a bunch of my friends, who don't do drugs were. I have a few questions about my rights during this situation. One of my friends cars was searched because the dogss barked at it. The police let the dogs go on it and they ripped up the seats and windows with their nails. The police also ripped out the speakers in the car. They found nothing because the owner doesn't do drugs. My question regareding this is, the made tons of damages to the car and didn't find anything. Are they just allowed to walk away and not do anything about. If so, is their any way to fight this. Also the dogs smelled drugs on another one of my friends cars, but only on the outside. They then made my friend write a list of people he has driven in the last week. Did my friend have to write this list leaglly? And the principle threatened if he didn't he would be expelled. Is that leagl. Thanks for answering my questions in advance.

Re: School Drug Raid Rights

Your friend does have rights. I am proud of you for not doing drugs and having friends who don't do drugs. Your friend may request that the appropriate police/government office compensate him/her for the damages. In order to do that (in Maryland) she/he must file a notarized internal affairs compliant within 90 days of the incident and a local govenment tort claims Notice within 180 days of the incident. Notices must be timely sent to many different govermental addresses which can be complicated and a lawyer may help. I do not have enough information to give "legal advice" here so if you want me to help, have your friend's parents call me to schedule an appointment. My office # is (301) 279-8773. PS a property damage estimate will be required to proove the damages. PPS your friend might also want to put her/his own auto insurance on notice of the damamges also. Best of luck, -AP
