Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Maryland

How do I add my spouse to a deed?

I will be married in the near future. I have a house in my name only, both on the mortgage and the deed, and that house will be our marital home. Once we are married, I would like to add my spouse's name to the deed. Is this possible? Is it costly? I am not worried about the mortgage - it is OK to stay in my name only, unless there is some advantage in adding his name to the mortgage too. I have never been married in the past. The property is located in Baltimore County, Maryland. Thanks!

It's a reasonably simple matter. A deed can be drawn up in which you convey title to your wife and yourself. Any real estate attorney can do this for you, and I wouldn't advise doing it yourself, because if you don't do it properly, you'll adversely affect the chain of title.

I typically charge $100 to perform this service. It will cost you about $25 to record the new deed in the land records of your county.

I'd be happy to assist you with this if you can send be a copy of your current deed.
