Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Maryland

Application denied because of misdemeanor

Recently, I my application to rent an apartment at an apartment complex in Maryland was denied because of a misdemeanor 'unlawful transport of firearm' conviction on my record (The police found my legally registered handgun in my car when they stopped me for a traffic violation- they even gave me my gun back after the trial). I said that I wasn't convicted of any crimes on my application, and they denied me because they said I lied. I thought that that only included felony convictions- are they allowed to inquiry about minor convictions on an application? What are my options? Also, I am studying to become a teacher in Maryland. Will that misdemeanor prevent me from becoming a teacher in Maryland?

Re: Application denied because of misdemeanor

A "crime" can be either a felony or a misdemeanor. Thus, if you said no in response to a question asking for any criminal convictions, your answer was incorrect. Perhaps if you explain the circumstances to the management office in a nicely worded letter or at a meeting, they'll reconsider your application.

As far as eligibility for a teaching position, that will be up to the individual hiring authority, but I wouldn't think that a misdemeanor conviction in and of itself would automatically disqualify you. I suggest you check with the individual school district on its policy.
