Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Maryland

Common area question

I live in a basement apartment in a private home. I rent month to month. My question is who is responsible for the clearing of the pathway that leads to my apartment? The path is on the side of the house that leads to the steps to my apartment. The path is part of the landlord's property. In the summer he rakes all the leaves, including the ones that fall on the pathway. It has snowed 3 times and he hasn't shoveled or salted the path. He claims I am responsible for doing so. Is that true?

Re: Common area question

Unless you have a lease that obligates you to shovel this walkway, it is the landlord's responsibility to do so. The walkway is on his property and you are only leasing the interior space within your apartment. If you signed a lease, check the language to see if it mentions this and who is responsible.
