Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Maryland
Early termination of a residential Lease
I am a federal civilian empolyee. I have been transfered and have transfer orders to move to Georgia. I have been informed that there is a law regarding military personnel. I want to know if there is any exception in Maryland law that would allow early termination of a lease because of a civilian government transfer.
Thanks

There's no such provision in MD law for non-military personnel. If you're in a situation where you have no choice regarding acceptance of the transfer, you might check with your personnel department to see if they have some kind of financial they can provide to you.
Be aware that the landlord has a duty to try and re-rent the property as soon as reasonably possible in order to hold you responsible for the ongoing rent. Of course, as soon as it does re-rent, your obligation ends (unless he had to cut the rent in order to find a tenant.) If you feel the landlord may drag its heels on this, you might try and sublease, although you'll probably need the landlord's approval of any replacement tenant you find.
