To get help, I have to get a eviction notice!

My home was foreclosed on in June of this year. While basically waiting (trying to save money, searching for a place to live and/or storage) for the inevitable to happen I was approached in front of my home by the new owner. He said he had sent me certifide letters (which I did not receive) I guess telling me to move out. I don't doubt that he did but I have no transportation and never picked up anything from the post office if sent. I explained my limited source of income, that I have a disability, a small child in school and no place yet to go. He was very understanding and we made a personal agreement that I would try to be out within the three weeks he allowed me. I contacted my counties social service office for assitance because I still can't afford to move or afford anything on my small income. I only receive at this time child and spousal support. They said I must have a eviction notice served to me before I can get them to help me! Do I have to tell the new owner to go ahead and evict me? I feel bad about this! He will put my belongings on the street! I obtained a storage space but its only me moving & packing my belongings. Only when I can borrow someones car! I have no one! How long does this eviction process last?

You could ask the new owner to write you a letter telling you to vacate in 3 weeks, and then take that letter to the social services agency to see if that entitles you to their assistance. Once a formal eviction action is filed, the process only takes a couple of weeks to get through the court system, although it can take a while to schedule and actually carry out the eviction. If the letter doesn't qualify you for assistance, the new owner can institute the eviction action and the court notice you will get should suffice.
