Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Maryland

Family liability upon death of tenant

In the state of Maryland, if a tenant dies while a year-long lease is in effect, is the tenant's family liable for the rent for the remainder of the lease even though they were not signatories to the rental agreement?

Re: Family liability upon death of tenant

In general, a non-party to a lease cannot be held liable thereunder, but it would not be possible for me to render an opinion on this without reviewing the lease at issue. The estate of the deceased person may be held liable for the remaining amounts due, but a timely claim against the estate must be filed. It is highly unlikely that any family member can be held personally liable for these amounts.
