Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Maryland
Landlord/Tenant
The apartment bldg I live in want to move me out into another apartment w/raise my rent because they put me in a low-income apartment and I don't have a certifcate. The leasing agent said I could live there because no low-income people have applied for the house. She told me my rent would only go up 2-5% once my lease was up. My lease is up and now they are making me move out of the house and want to raise my rent. I signed a lease can they move me out and raise my rent once the lease is up at the end of January? I don't have a low-income certificate but a lease is a lease? Correct? Please Help!!! Thank You

Re: Landlord/Tenant
Since your initial lease is up (as you put it), your legal status becomes that of a month to month tenant. This means that either party can terminate the tenancy by giving 30 days' written notice to the other party. Therefore, the landlord, by giving you such notice, can evict you if you're not willing to pay whatever new rent is required.
