Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Maryland

Lease and Electricity

Since we left in march we agreed to pay the remain lease until it expires (June 1st).We call the local electric company to cut off the electricity since we werent living there any more.In May the Landlord turn the electricity back on in their name, and after we paid our entire lease contract (12 months). The Landlord started to send us their electricity bill in their names requesting reimbursement for the remaining months which we were not living there anymore. My question is If we turned off the electricity in our names ,even though we were not living there anymore why are we responsible for the remaining electricity bills in the landlord's name?

Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Lease and Electricity

Depends on the terms of the lease, but if electricity is necessary for the safety and security of the property, you probably have to pay it. Heat may have been necessary to keep the pipes from freezing, or lights (or a security system) may have been needed to prevent break-ins.
