By litigation. This requires filing a lawsuit and establishing all the elements of an adverse possession claim, including proving the length of time the plaintiff held the property, the nature of its possession and so forth. It may well require formal discovery and trial on these issues. Because a claim for adverse possession requires a careful analysis of the specific facts (and the way the law treats those facts), it would be prudent to consult an attorney before filing suit.
