Neighbor dispute regarding tree

A neighbors tree was hanging over our property and brushing on our roof. We trimed the branches that were hanging over our side of the fence. Now our neighbor is complaining and wants us to pay for the rest of the triming of the tree on his side and or removal of the rest of the tree. He wants to consult an Arborist to see if the tree has been injured because of us triming the tree. Our we legally responsible to correct the problem when he neglected to prune his tree on a regular basis and we had to prune the tree that was hanging on our property.

You were within your rights to do what you did, although it might have been prudent to pre-notify the neighbor and give him an opportunity to do the trimming.
