Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Maryland
Neighbors and Pets
My neighbors have disliked my dog since I moved in to this townhouse community three years ago. They have done everything from complain to the county health department about the condition of my back yard (only warnings were given; no fines were ever imposed) to leave nasty notes on my car.
I recently adopted a second dog, a puppy. Since my old dog and the new pup are less than a week into their new relationship, there is some yipping when I leave the two dogs (alone together) for work in the morning. I don't know how long it is before the puppy calms down, but I have not gotten any complaints about this ... yet. I also suspect the number of complaints to the health department will double now that the number of dogs has doubled.
My neighbors seem to be looking for anything to "get me," and I'm wondering what my rights are (before it gets ugly). Help!

Re: Neighbors and Pets
As long as you comply with all county requirements, the bylaws of your condo association, and any other rules pertaining to pets in your development, and show consideration and respect for your neighbors, you should have no problems. Condo associations have a lot of leeway in governing themselves and establishing rules to promote the quiet enjoyment of the premises by all, so something like excessive barking might well get you into trouble. On the other hand, many townhouse occupants have dogs as pets, so as long as you control and train them, you should be okay.
