Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Maryland

non-rent paying occupant rights

What are the rights of an adult who is not a relative that I have allowed to live in my home free of charge for three years?

How much notice must I give to kick the person out?

Does he or she get some sort of ownership after a period of time?

No ownership interest is conveyed. You need to provide the person with a thirty day notice to quit letter essentially terminating the free tenancy. Then if they won't leave file a hold over petition in landlord tenant court. Attempts to have the police remove them as trespassers have in my experience not usually been successful.

I don't think you have to give this person any notice--he's not a "tenant" because he hasn't been paying any rent. He's really just a guest who apparently wore out his welcome. I'd give him whatever time you think he should need to relocate, and if he refuses to leave by then, tell him you intend to have the police escort him out.
