Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Maryland
What are my rights?
About eight months ago, my two daughters and I moved into my fiance's house. Shortly after, he bagan verbally abusing me and my oldest daughter. He has asked us to leave but agreed to let us stay until they finish school in June. I am buying a house to move into but it won't be available until the end of July or August. He told me we have to leave in June. This means that I have to move my girls twice within three months. What are my rights? He asked us to move in here eight months ago, now wants us out! Do I have to leave before my house is available? He owns his home and I am paying him rent. Please help. This will make three moves within a year!

Re: What are my rights?
Unfortunately, when you moved in with your fiance your legal rights were no better than that of a tenant--that's really what you are. Therefore, since there's no written lease, either party is free to terminate the relationship by giving 30 days' notice. It's terrible to have to move twice in such a short period of time, so maybe you can convince him to let you stay the extra 2 months or so till your permanent home is finished. It would be worth it from your standpoint to pay him extra rent for July and August rather than to bear the expense and inconvenience of the additional move.
